FAQ
How is the vehicle transfer tax calculated?
ITP is the transfer tax normally paid by the buyer when purchasing a used vehicle from a private individual.
For vehicles found in the official Spanish valuation catalogue, the calculation begins with the value assigned to the exact make and model by the Spanish tax authority.
An age-related percentage is then applied using the vehicle’s first registration date. This produces the reduced official value used by the calculator.
The applicable regional rate, exemption or fixed amount is then determined using the buyer’s Spanish province.
This is why selecting the correct model, first registration date and buyer province is important.
Why does the buyer’s province affect the result?
Vehicle transfer tax is administered by Spain’s regional tax authorities. Rates and rules therefore vary depending on where the buyer is fiscally resident.
Some regions use a standard percentage. Others have different rates for high-powered or low-emission vehicles, exemptions for certain older vehicles, or fixed charges based on engine capacity.
Always select the province corresponding to the buyer’s Spanish address.
Why is the result an estimate?
The result is based on the information entered and the applicable 2026 official vehicle values and regional tax rules.
The final amount can only be confirmed after checking the vehicle documents, sales contract and buyer’s information. No payment is taken when you submit a transfer enquiry.
Our service is not currently available when the buyer lives in the Region of Valencia, the Canary Islands, Ceuta or Melilla.
Is ITP calculated from the vehicle’s sale price?
When the exact vehicle is listed, the calculator uses its official value after the applicable age reduction. If the model is not listed, a value must be entered manually and checked against the documents.
What if I cannot find the exact model?
Check the first registration date, fuel type and P.2 engine power shown in the vehicle documents. If the version is still unavailable, select the manual-value option.
Where is the transfer service available?
